INOX 316 is an austenitic structural steel containing molybdenum and nickel. Thanks to these elements, the corrosion
resistance of the metal is so high that it allows the use of steel in cryogenic conditions and aggressive environments.
In addition, molybdenum protects steel 316 from pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments and in acetic
acid vapors.
INOX 316 stainless steel is characterized by excellent strength, heat resistance, ductility and resistance to all acids.
It exhibits particular stability in the environment of sulfuric acid and its salts.
In fact, AISI 316 stainless steel is an improved variation of AISI 304 steel. But 304 stainless steel and 316 steel have
an important difference - the latter has better creep resistance at higher temperatures. Also, 316 steel lacks magnetic properties.

Scope of application :
Stainless steel 316, due to its high resistance to corrosion and oxidation, has found wide application:
in the chemical industry (tanks for storing aggressive substances) and mechanical engineering;
in the production of equipment for the food, pharmaceutical, mining and petrochemical industries;
in the organization of metal structures, roofing and architectural applications;
in the manufacture of containers for the content of corrosive liquids;
in the production of domestic and industrial heat exchangers;
in the manufacture of products that are operated under conditions of elevated temperatures and loads.
Welding :
AISI 316 / SS 316 / INOX 316 stainless steel can be welded in a variety of ways. Post-weld heat treatment of 316 steel is not required. Seams are recommended to be cleaned of scale and then passivated.
Processing :
Annealing: at 1010℃-1120℃; cooling - in air or in water. After annealing, etching and passivation are necessary.
For your information: the optimum anti-corrosion properties of steel are achieved at a temperature of +1070℃,
followed by instantaneous cooling in water.
Vacation: at a temperature in the range of 200-400℃, followed by cooling in air.
Passivation: 20-25% HNO3 solution at 20℃.
Surface cleaning: solution of nitric acid and hydrofluoric/hydrofluoric acid in proportions: 10% HNO3 + 2% HF at
room temperature or 60℃. Sulfuric acid solution in proportions: 10% H2SO4 + 0.5% HNO3) at 60℃.
Hot working: initial temperature - 1150 - 1200℃; final - over 900℃.
Note: Forging must be completed between 930 and 980℃ to be ineffective.
Cold working: 316 steel is very ductile, therefore it is easily subjected to stretch forming, bending and deep and
rotational drawing, drawing.
Corrosion resistance :
General Corrosion
Steel grades AISI 316, 316L are the most resistant of all stainless steels of the 300th series to atmospheric and
other moderate types of corrosion. All environments in which it is recommended to use steels of the 300th series
do not pose a danger to molybdenum-containing grades. One notable exception is nitric acid, which serves as a
strong oxidizing agent for them.
AISI 316 is significantly more resistant to sulfuric acid than any other chromium-nickel grade. At temperatures around 50 ℃, AISI 316 is resistant to this acid in concentrations up to 5%. At temperatures
up to 40℃ and above 60℃this grade has excellent resistance to higher concentrations. In places where sulphurous
gases condense, it is much more resistant than other types. However, the safe concentration should be carefully monitored.
The molybdenum content of AISI 316 steel provides resistance to oxidation in most used environments. The alloy
provides excellent resistance to boiling of 20% phosphoric acid in laboratory tests. It is also widely used in hot organic
and fatty acids, so it is often used in the manufacture and processing of certain foods and pharmaceuticals.
AISI 316 and AISI 316L can be used equally well in environments where there is a risk of intergranular corrosion.
The use of low carbon AISI 316L is preferred in welded parts.
