Characteristics of steel grade AISI 304L / SS 304L :
INOX 304L is a corrosion resistant stainless steel. It is distinguished by high resistance to intergranular corrosion at
high temperatures (up to 500°C) and excellent resistance in most aggressive environments.

The amount of carbon in the AISI 304L steel composition is lower than in AISI 304, so the ability to resist intergranular
corrosion in welds and slow cooling zones is better in AISI 304L.

Scope of application :
AISI 304L stainless steel is recommended for use in cases where materials require strong welding. Also stainless steel
304L is used:
in mechanical engineering and automotive industry;
in food and chemical industry;
in medicine and pharmaceuticals;
in architecture and construction;
in the production of products for work in nitric acid environments at high temperatures;
in welded structures;
in pipelines and boilers.
Main characteristics :
good overall corrosion resistance
very good protection against MKK
suitability for cryogenic applications
excellent weldability
Corrosion resistance :
INOX 304 L has good overall wet corrosion resistance and is particularly recommended where there is a risk of
intergranular corrosion.
INOX 304 L has good resistance to most foodstuffs and numerous chemical media:
dilute alkaline solutions at ambient temperature,
dilute organic acids at ambient temperature,
neutral or alkaline salt solutions without halogen compound,
most organic environments.
Intergranular corrosion :
The reason for the insecurity of austenitic stainless steels in the temperature range of 425°C - 820°C is the
deposition of chromium carbides at the grain boundaries. Such steels "sensitize" and become susceptible to
intergranular corrosion in aggressive environments.
That is why AISI 304L steel with a low carbon content is preferred for products in which the material is exposed
to aggressive environments after welding. "Low carbon" increases the time required for the deposition of "harmful"
chromium carbides, but does not stop the reaction of their deposition for a long time in a given temperature range.
Cracking (Cracking Corrosion) under stress :
Of all the austenitic stainless steel grades AISI 302, AISI 304, AISI 304L are the most susceptible to stress corrosion
cracking (SCC) in halide stress due to their relatively low nickel content.
Causes of SCC:
the presence of halide ions (generally chlorides),
residual tensile stresses,
temperatures over 50°C.
Stresses can arise due to deformation of the alloy in the cold state during forming, or rotational drawing, or during
welding, due to stress from changing thermal cycles. Stress levels can be reduced by annealing or heat treatment
after cold deformation.
Welding :
Stainless steel 304 L / SS 304 L is easy to weld with standard methods. It is not necessary to heat treat the steel
after welding. Welds are cleaned of scale and passivated.
Treatment :
Annealing : at 1050℃-1075℃; cooling - in air or in water.
Vacation : at a temperature of 400-600℃ for 1 hour with a low risk of sensitization.
Passivation : 20-25% HNO3 solution at 20℃.
Surface cleaning : solution of nitric acid and hydrofluoric/hydrofluoric acid in proportions: 10% HNO3 + 2% HF at
room temperature or 60℃. Sulfuric acid solution in proportions: 10% H2SO4 + 0.5% HNO3) at 60℃.
Hot working : initial temperature–1150-1260℃; final - 900-925 ℃.
Cold working : 304L steel is ductile, resilient and easy to form by stretching, bending, deep drawing and rotary drawing.
